Do you love bird watching; Kenya is the place to visit, I promise you that you will not be disappointed. Kenya has a vast variety of bird species that is over 1000 in variety habitats. From Montane forest, to tropical coast in every conceivable altitude range; deserts, open savannah grassland, lowland forest, bush scrub lakes and mud flats. Kenya has great national parks and reserves that are host to many different bird species.
The National parks and reserves have their own quota, of this grand variety of birds and will give you a great experience in bird watching. Many of this game reserves offer bird watching safari’s and give it a great importance to planning this safari’s and I promise you a great experience. Birds can also be found out side game reserves and parks covering the same wide variation of habitat; Examples are Lake Magadi, only 110 km South of Nairobi in Rift Valley, Kakamega forest in western Kenya, Lake Naivasha 90 km north of Nairobi; all of his areas have a wide range of birds.
A visit to Kakamega Forest located 418 km away from Nairobi which is Kenyans virgin tropical rainforest, you will get to see over 330 bird’s species, and which is also a home to number of primates. This is a tropical rainforest, so all through out the year you are guaranteed to see different bird species. It is a home to special birds not found else where in Kenya they include: gray parrot, great blue turaco, blue headed bee-eater, black and white casqued hornbill, yellow-spotted barbet, hairy-breasted barbet, brown-eared and yellow crested woodpeckers, African broadbill, and many other species of illadopsis and yellow-bellied wattle-eyes.
Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kenya is located in central Kenya just south of the equator (150 kms north-northeast of Nairobi). In Mount Kenya you have both the opportunity for sporting the forest and moorland –dwelling birds. It is also home to lesser kestrel, the purple-throated, cuckoo-shrike and is one of the few remaining areas in Kenya where the lammergeier can still be seen. Mount Kenya is a water catchment’s area and has snow covering the peaks but also very high rain falls. A visit to Mount Kenya will leave you both amazed and breathless.
Flamingos are found in Lake Baringo and Nakuru located at the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Baringo has the population of one and two million birds, mostly staying around the southern end of the lake. It is also home to more than 450 bird species this is out of the 1200 different bird species found in Kenya. This is the bird watching centre in Kenya and it is possible to go bird watching walks with resident ornithologist. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley Lakes that attract millions of flamingos. Lake Nakuru is also known for being the most fabulous bird spectacle in the world, habiting the greatest bird spectacle on earth. Fuschia pink flamingoes whose numbers are often more than a million are found at the lake. They feed on the algae, which thrives in the warm waters. There are two types of flamingo species found at the lake; lesser flamingo which is large in number can be distinguished by its deep red carmine bill and pink plumage unlike the greater, which has a bill with a black tip. There are also over 400 resident bird species on the lake and in the surrounding parks/area. Among these are; little grebes, white winged black terns, avocets, ducks, Pelicans and Cormorants. Due to the climate change, the number of flamingos found at the lake is reducing but they are great effort to protect them from extinction.
Aberdare located 100km north of Nairobi is a host of more than 250 bird species; they include Crowned Eagle and the Rufons-breasted sparrow hawk, jackson’s francolin, sparry hawk, goshawk, eagles, sunbirds and plovers, there are also birds such as the African Black duck, Golden-winged Sunbird, silvery-cheeked hornbill Hartlaub’s Turaco and white-eyed salty flycatcher that are not likely to be seen out side the high lands. In this region there are other great bird watch areas this include Mukurweini valleys (south-east of the Aberdares), Kikuyu Escarpment Forest, and Kinangop Grasslands (west side of the aberdares). Bird viewing is a very rewarding experience.
