Located in northeastern Rwanda, hugging the border with Tanzania, the low-lying Akagera National Park is Central Africa’s largest protected wetland, characterised by woodland, swamps and savannah. Home to an array of great game, it is the only park in Rwanda that houses the African Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and buffalo. Several lakes house huddles of hippos and basking crocodiles, while the park’s birdlife is spectacularly diverse – over 500 species have been recorded here! Diverse and dramatically beautiful, Akagera National Park is a worthy, wildlife-filled addition to your tailor-made tour of Rwanda.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s equivalent of some of Eastern Africa’s savannah reserves, the low-lying park is nestled in the east of the country on the border with Tanzania. The habitat of undulating plains covered in dense woodland and grassland, leading to swamps, lakes and papyrus forests to the Far East contrasts heavily with the mountainous landscapes for which Rwanda is typically known, and those looking to concentrate their itinerary on Rwanda but with some variety may wish to include this in their plans.
