The migration is not a single moment but a year-long story, and it looks entirely different depending on when you arrive. Between July and October, the action concentrates around the Mara River, with herds massing on the banks before surging across water where crocodiles wait beneath the surface, a spectacle that has come to define East African safari travel. Between December and March, the story shifts south to the short-grass plains of Ndutu, where over half a million calves are born in a matter of weeks, drawing one of the densest concentrations of predators found anywhere on the continent. Neither season can be guaranteed down to the day, since the herds follow the rains rather than a calendar, but twenty years of reading these patterns means we know where to position you for the best possible chance, whichever chapter of the story you choose to witness.
