The Serengeti’s two million acres of open plain, with no fence, no boundary, and no visible edge, is a different kind of experience from anything found further north. So is Ngorongoro Crater, a self-contained world of more than 25,000 animals living within a single volcanic caldera, and the remote southern circuit of Selous and Ruaha, where visitor numbers are low enough that genuine solitude in the wild is still entirely possible.

Tanzania is also the engine room of the Great Migration. The wildebeest and zebra that cross the Mara River in Kenya each July spent the preceding months on Tanzania’s plains, calving in Ndutu, gathering in the western corridor, and building momentum across the Serengeti before the northward push begins. Following that journey from its source, rather than catching only its most famous chapter, gives a Tanzania safari a depth and coherence that few wildlife experiences can match.
