The Safari Experience
Kenya’s north and south could almost belong to different continents. One is dust, dry riverbeds, and animals found nowhere else on earth. The other is open grassland beneath a snow-capped equatorial mountain, and herds of elephants that have been studied, named, and photographed for over fifty years. This 10-day journey takes you through both, then finishes in the lion-dense plains that gave Kenya its safari reputation in the first place.
This is a tightly built photographic safari, designed for travelers who want range rather than repetition. In Samburu, you’ll work with species found almost nowhere else in Kenya: the reticulated giraffe, the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the desert-adapted Beisa oryx. In Amboseli, the subject shifts entirely to scale and storytelling, framing elephant matriarchs and their herds against the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro. And in the Maasai Mara, you’ll spend your final days amid the open theatre of big cat hunts, possible river crossings, and the sheer density of wildlife that built this country’s name.

Detailed Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi – Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)
You land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer into Nairobi for an overnight stay, a gentle introduction before the safari proper begins. Use the evening to settle in, check your gear, and rest after the journey.
Day 2: Fly to Samburu Game Reserve
A flight north carries you out of the green highlands and into Kenya’s arid frontier, where the Ewaso Ng’iro River cuts a narrow ribbon of life through dry, rugged terrain. Samburu National Reserve is home to a collection of species found almost nowhere else in the country, sometimes called the Samburu Special Five: the reticulated giraffe, with its striking geometric coat pattern; the endangered Grevy’s zebra, taller and narrower-striped than its more common cousin; and the desert-adapted Beisa oryx, with its long, straight horns and pale coat built for the heat.
You’ll settle into your camp along the river before an afternoon game drive into the surrounding acacia woodland and open plains, where these specialist species gather alongside healthy populations of elephant, lion, and leopard.
Day 3 & 4: Two Full days in Samburu National Park
Two full days to work this remarkable, often-overlooked landscape. Samburu’s stark light, dust, and riverine woodland create a visual character all their own, distinct from the greener landscapes further south, and the resident wildlife rewards patience in equal measure. The Ewaso Ng’iro River draws elephant herds throughout the day, part of a population monitored by Save the Elephants, a research organisation based in Samburu since 1997.
Beyond the Special Five, expect strong predator sightings, with lion, leopard, and cheetah all present in good numbers, alongside the long-necked gerenuk, which browses standing upright on its hind legs, and the blue-grey-necked Somali ostrich found nowhere else in Kenya outside this region. Morning and afternoon drives along the riverbanks offer some of the most distinctive backdrops in the country, rugged hills, sun-bleached earth, and the green ribbon of the Ewaso Ng’iro cutting through it all.
Day 5: Fly South to Amboseli National Park
A flight south carries you across the country and into an entirely different photographic world. Amboseli is defined by one image above all others: elephant herds moving across open plains with the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them, Africa’s highest peak and one of the most recognisable natural backdrops on earth.
You’ll settle into your camp with an afternoon game drive into the park’s open terrain, where elephant herds are encountered on virtually every outing, often led by matriarchs that researchers here have tracked for decades as part of the world’s longest-running elephant study.
Day 6: A full day beneath Kilimanjaro – Amboseli
A full day dedicated to one of Africa’s most photographed landscapes. Amboseli’s flat, open terrain provides an unobstructed foreground for the mountain, and with luck and clear morning light, you’ll have the chance to frame herds of elephants against Kilimanjaro’s glaciated summit, an image that has come to define East African wildlife photography.
Beyond the elephants, Amboseli’s swamps and marshlands, fed by snowmelt percolating through volcanic rock from Kilimanjaro itself, support buffalo herds, hippo pods, and a rich diversity of waterbirds. Lion and cheetah move through the surrounding plains, and an early start or late afternoon drive offers the best chance of catching the mountain clear of the cloud that often gathers by midday.
Day 7: Fly via Wilson to Maasai Mara Game Reserve
A flight through Nairobi’s Wilson Airport carries you west into the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s most celebrated wildlife reserve and the final, dramatic chapter of this journey. Depending on the season, you may arrive in time for the tail end of the Great Wildebeest Migration, with herds of wildebeest and zebra still moving across the plains and the chance of witnessing a Mara River crossing, one of the most intense wildlife spectacles on the continent.
You’ll settle into your camp with an afternoon game drive, your first taste of a landscape built for big cat sightings: open grassland, scattered acacia, and a density of predators that has made the Mara famous the world over.
Day 8 & 9: Two Full days in the Maasai Mara Reserve
Two full days in the heart of the Mara, with mornings and afternoons dedicated to tracking lion, cheetah, and leopard across the reserve’s open plains. The scale here is what sets the Mara apart: grassland stretching to the horizon, supporting some of the highest predator densities anywhere in Africa, with hunts, kills, and territorial disputes unfolding regularly across the open ground.
If your visit falls within migration season, your guide will work the Mara River and its crossing points, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather before committing to the water, crocodiles waiting beneath the surface. Outside migration months, resident wildlife remains exceptional, with strong, established lion prides and frequent cheetah sightings across the open grass. An optional dawn balloon flight offers a final, unforgettable perspective on this landscape before you depart.
Day 10: Journey’s End – Fly to Nairobi, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
A final flight returns you to Nairobi, connecting directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward journey home. Ten days, three landscapes, and a portfolio that runs from the desert specialists of Samburu to the iconic Kilimanjaro backdrop of Amboseli and the open theatre of the Maasai Mara, a complete photographic portrait of Kenya in just over a week.
Best time to travel: June through October and January through March offer the strongest dry-season conditions across all three regions, with wildlife concentrated near water sources in Samburu and Amboseli, and the Great Migration present in the Mara from July through October. Early morning light, particularly in Amboseli, gives the clearest views of Kilimanjaro before midday cloud builds.
Why this itinerary: Few ten-day routes in Kenya offer this much photographic range: species found nowhere else in the country, the single most iconic wildlife backdrop in Africa, and the predator density that built the Mara’s reputation.
