The Safari Experience
The Safari Experience
Some safaris follow wildlife. This one follows a story, the true tale of a lioness named Elsa, raised by George and Joy Adamson in the wild heart of Meru National Park and immortalised in Joy’s book “Born Free.” This 9-day journey traces a path from Nairobi’s grand colonial-era hotels to Amboseli’s elephant herds beneath Kilimanjaro, into Meru’s rugged, river-threaded wilderness where Elsa’s story unfolded, and finally to the lion-dense plains of the Maasai Mara’s Naboisho Conservancy.
It is a flying safari in the truest sense, four distinct landscapes joined by scheduled light aircraft rather than long days on the road, giving you more time in each place and less time getting there. From Cynthia Moss’s decades of elephant research at Amboseli to the literary legacy that still shapes how the world thinks about wild lions, this itinerary weaves Kenya’s conservation history through every stop.
Detailed Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
You are met on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to Fairmont The Norfolk, a landmark hotel built in 1904 and, for over a century, one of East Africa’s most storied launching points for a high-end wildlife safari. This tranquil, sophisticated oasis in the heart of Kenya’s capital offers 170 luxury guestrooms with marble bathrooms and every modern amenity, a fitting first night before the safari proper begins. Your overnight stay is on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2: Nairobi – A full day in Nairobi, beginning with the elephant orphanage
You’re collected from the Norfolk and driven to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphanage, a world-famous animal refuge where the daily feeding begins at 11am. Watching dozens of baby elephants come running to their keepers, latching on to oversized milk bottles before tumbling into the mud for their afternoon bath, tends to be the single moment most safari-goers remember Kenya by. This haven takes in orphaned elephants from across Kenya and beyond, animals who lost their mothers to drought, accident, or poaching, and has become the most successful sanctuary of its kind anywhere in the world, having saved over 200 baby elephants as well as young rhinos.
You’ll drive back to the Norfolk for lunch and have the rest of the afternoon free to enjoy the hotel at your own pace.

Day 3 & 4: Fly to Amboseli National Park
You’re collected from your hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for a scheduled morning flight to Amboseli, landing on the plains directly beneath Mount Kilimanjaro, where you’ll spend the next two days. A sumptuous lunch awaits at the park’s lodge. Amboseli takes its name from the Maasai phrase for “the place of water,” and its springs and swamps are fed by an endless supply filtered through thousands of metres of volcanic rock from the mountain itself.
Amboseli remains one of Kenya’s most beloved parks, home to massive elephant herds beneath Africa’s highest peak. It was here, too, that the American naturalist Cynthia Moss began one of the longest-running elephant studies ever undertaken, work that shaped much of what the world now understands about elephant family life, some of which she later documented in her acclaimed book and film. With some luck, you may even encounter descendants of the very families she came to know so well.
Afternoons bring a game drive into the park’s panoramic landscape. Your accommodation is full board at Tortilis Luxury Camp.

Day 5 & 6: Mountain to Mountain – Fly to Meru National Park
From Amboseli, you head north to the iconic Meru National Park, set on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Kenya’s highest peak and Africa’s second-highest mountain, a genuine mountain-slope-to-mountain-slope transition. Meru remains one of Kenya’s wildest, least-visited national parks, a landscape of rugged jungle, rivers, swamps, and grassland built for the kind of game viewing that feels like genuine discovery rather than a well-worn circuit.
This is the park made famous by Joy Adamson’s “Born Free,” the true story of the years she and her husband George spent here studying the local lion and cheetah population. Elsa, the lioness at the heart of that story, is buried near her favourite stream within the park, not far from the hill on which your camp now stands.
Meru’s rivers run thick with hippo and crocodile, and anglers among the group can try their luck for barbus and catfish along the Tana River. Birdlife is similarly abundant, with over 300 species recorded here. Your accommodation is at Elsa’s Kopje, built on Mughwango Hill above the site of George Adamson’s original camp.

Day 7 – 8: Fly Into the Maasai Mara
After breakfast, you’re dropped at the airstrip for a scheduled flight to the Maasai Mara. On arrival, your host meets you for a game drive en route to Leopard Hill, arriving by midday before lunch. You’ll have time to relax in your tented room before joining your guide for an afternoon game drive into the surrounding conservancy.
Naboisho is renowned for its bountiful biodiversity and breathtaking scenery, hosting some of the finest concentrations of African wildlife found anywhere, including one of the highest lion densities recorded globally, with more than seventy individually identified lions calling this conservancy home. All meals and your overnight stay are at Leopard Hill Camp, where retractable starbed roofs let you fall asleep beneath an open Kenyan sky.

Day 9: Journey’s End – Fly to Wilson Airport
After breakfast, you’re transferred to the airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Wilson Airport, Nairobi, bringing this nostalgic, literary, and thoroughly luxurious safari to its close, reluctantly, as most guests tend to put it.
